Home from the War: Stories of St. Catharines Wartime Neighbourhoods is a celebration of neighbourhoods, the end of war and St. Catharines.

Between 1941 and 1947, Wartime Housing Limited (later Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation - CMHC) built over 30,000 homes for munitions workers and returning veterans and their families. The building continued into the peace years and today there is an estimated one million Wartime Homes still standing in Canada.

There are over 1,700 Wartime Homes in St. Catharines, built between 1941 and 1947. While the neighbourhoods may be familiar, few people know why these homes were built or the stories of their first occupants.

Home from the War: Stories of St. Catharines Wartime Neighbourhoods is part of a larger project of the St. Catharines’ Heritage Committee to explore the history of these unique homes and how they helped to change and shape our city. If you have a story to share related to these homes, visit the Heritage Committee on-line at www.wartimehouses.com.

The photos of this exhibit have been gathered from several sources including:

• St. Catharines Museum’s Standard Collection

• The St. Catharines Standard book St. Catharines - Canada’s Canal City

• Personal collections of families who made their homes in these neighbourhoods.

Presented in partnership between the St. Catharines Heritage Committee and the Cultural Services Office at the City of St. Catharines.

The City Hall exhibit program has been coordinated through the Recreation and Community Services Department since 2004 with support from the St. Catharines Public Art Advisory Committee. Each year three or four new exhibits provide City Hall visitors with original art, historic photos or cultural treasures that reflect St. Catharines’ stories, creative self-expression, experiences and perspectives.

The City of St,. Catharines seeks to encourage all those who care about the community to participate in making art, collecting it and commissioning it.
