The year’s first round of property tax bills are in the mail.
With interim property tax bills making their way to addresses across the city, residents should be advised their first property tax payment of 2020 is due Friday, Feb. 28. Payments must be made by 4:30 p.m. on the due date to avoid being subject to a late payment charge. This applies even if a bill has not been received in the mail. Penalty charges of 1.25 per cent will be added on the first business day of each month. Any resident who does not receive a bill should contact Citizens First at 905.688.5600 or by email at CitizensFirst@stcatharines.ca.
Bills are due four times a year — Feb. 28, April 30, June 30 and Sept. 30 — and the City offers differing payment options to suit the needs of residents. Residents can register for a 10-month pre-authorized payment plan, allowing for a year’s worth of taxes to be spread across 10 monthly payments.
Additionally, residents can also make property tax payments at most financial institutions, or via mail to: City of St. Catharines; Citizens First, CSS Department; PO Box 3012 Stn Main; St. Catharines, ON, L2R 7C2. Cash payments should not be made via the mail.
Tax payments can also be made in person at City Hall, 50 Church St., Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., using cash, cheque or debit card. To ensure all residents can make in-person payments, Citizens First will hold extended hours on Feb. 25, 26 and 27, opening from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. During extended hours visitors can access City Hall via the James Street entrance.
Cheque payments can also be deposited in the City Hall deposit box next to City Hall’s James Street entrance. Do not deposit cash.
Property owners who make their tax payments through their banks, financial institutions or online banking by 4:30 p.m. Feb. 28 will not be subject to a late fee. Learn more about property taxes and pre-authorized payments at www.stcatharines.ca/Taxes
