The City of St. Catharines is responsible for the regular inspection and maintenance of fire hydrants in the city. This helps ensure that hydrants work correctly and have adequate pressure if needed for firefighting.
Temporary water discolouration
When fire hydrants are under maintenance or in use with firefighting, the activity can disturb sediment in water lines. This may cause temporary discolouration of the water in the immediate area.
If you experience discoloured water, run the cold water in your home to flush the discoloured water from the lines. If the water does not clear within 10 minutes of flushing, please contact us for assistance.
Snow clearing
Before winter, our staff attach markers to fire hydrants so they can be easy to find in the snow. If you have a fire hydrant on your boulevard, please keep it accessible and clear by removing the snow around the hydrant. In the event of a fire, this saves precious time and helps firefighters gain access.
Connecting to a fire hydrant
To connect to a fire hydrant during construction, complete our Application For Use of Fire Hydrant and submit it to the Engineering, Facilities and Environmental Services Department located on the first floor of City Hall.
Temporary Use of Hydrant Fees can include:
- Hydrant connection - Temporary
- Weekly rental fee of hydrant meter and use of backflow valve assembly
- Refundable Deposit for hydrant meter and valve assembly
- Water usage based on hydrant meter readings
