The Ontario Fire Code has mandatory requirements for the installation of portable fire extinguishers in most buildings, except for single-family homes. However, we encourage all homeowners to include a portable fire extinguisher in their fire safety plans.

How many fire extinguishers do I need? |
The number of fire extinguishers you need will depend on factors such as size of building, number of floors, use of the building and more. Review the Ontario Fire Code for more information. |
What do the 'A','B', and 'C' letters and numbers mean on my portable fire extinguisher? |
These letters indicate the type of fire that the extinguisher is designed to be used on.
Many extinguishers will have multiple ratings, such as 'ABC' or 'BC'.

I operate a restaurant. Do I need a special type of extinguisher? |
If you have a kitchen equipped with commercial hoods and kitchen suppression systems, you must have a type 'K' fire extinguisher, which is designed for use with these systems. |
Can I keep my extinguishers in a closet or cupboard? |
You must always keep all portable fire extinguishers mounted, visible and accessible. A highly visible fire extinguisher helps ensure it can be easily reached in the event of a fire and that all staff and customers can be aware of its location. In large warehouses and stores or where visibility is obstructed, you should install signs to help direct people to its location. |
How often does the extinguisher need servicing? |
The extinguisher must be visually checked every month for any sign of tampering or damage. Remove the extinguisher from its bracket and examine it closely. Ensure that the gauge is pointing to the 'OK' area, that the protective pin is in place and that there are no obstructions in the hose or nozzle that affects operation. You must have the extinguisher serviced once per year by a qualified firm. The servicing will vary depending on the age and type of extinguisher. Often, it can be serviced on-site without removal from the building. Following the service, a new service tag should be installed, showing the name of the company, technician's signature and date of service. |
Does the St. Catharines Fire Service inspect or service portable fire extinguishers? |
No, members of our Fire Service do not perform the required inspection or servicing. The owner is responsible to have competent and qualified individuals conduct these services. |
Who should I contact to have my portable fire extinguishers serviced? |
Use an internet search engine to look up qualified fire extinguisher service agents in St. Catharines or look in the phone directory under 'Fire Extinguishers' to find local firms. |
How can I remember when my portable fire extinguisher is due for annual servicing? |
The tag applied by the servicing company lists the date of last inspection. When you perform your monthly service check, ensure that it has not been more than 12 months since the date of their last visit. Most service companies will arrange to place you on a regular call-back schedule where they can return at the required times. |
