Educators may not be able to take students on a field trip to the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre right now, but they can take them on a virtual tour.
As students continue to learn online during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the museum remains closed, staff at the museum have started to offer free, private, booked virtual school and educational programs and tours.
“Our engaging and experienced staff have been leading audiences through programming and tours online since mid-March, and we’re excited to expand that to any educators looking to take their students on a virtual tour of our permanent galleries or a behind-the-scenes look at our museum’s collection,” said Kathleen Powell, the City’s supervisor of historical services.
In addition to tours, other virtual opportunities include programs such as Follow the North Star, The Travelling Museum and Jr. Engineers, which have been slightly modified to ensure enjoyment for students learning from home.
“We’re also happy to lead a program on any local history topics educators and their students might have an interest in, including a virtual walking tour of St. Paul Street or the City’s historic architecture,” said Powell.
The museum has a list of available programs that appeal to students from kindergarten to Grade 12. The programming list, along with information about other interactive online programming the museum is currently hosting, can be found online at www.stcatharines.ca/museumevents. Educators wishing to book a virtual tour can email Adrian Petry at museum@stcatharines.ca. The museum also welcomes the community to submit their name for an open invite list if they wish to participate in programming.
In addition to the virtual tours, regular programming includes “LIVE! from the St. Catharines Museum” on Thursdays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., “Museum From Home” on Wednesdays at 11 a.m., as well as a Virtual Museum Lecture Series being held bi-weekly on Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
