With the Province and Niagara Region ending their respective mask mandates, and with the State of Emergency related to COVID-19 now over, the City of St. Catharines’s mandatory masking by-law for enclosed public spaces will be lifted March 21, 2022.
In light of improving indicators and protections afforded by mass vaccination uptake, the Province and Region have lifted similar mandates requiring masks in most indoor public spaces. In an effort to remain consistent with regulations from upper levels of government the City will lift its by-law on Monday. The lifting of the City’s mask by-law will allow individuals to access indoor public spaces, including City facilities, without a mask on March 21. The City’s mask by-law has been in effect since July 2020.
While mask requirements will be lifted at City facilities, individuals should note that some Provincial masking requirements remain in effect for high-risk settings such as public transit and health care facilities.
While protection afforded by widespread vaccination allows for easing of restrictions such as the mask by-law, the City is urging residents and visitors to practice caution. COVID-19 remains prevalent in the community and continues to represent a risk to individual and public health. Individuals are encouraged to protect themselves by continuing mask use if they are comfortable; maintaining physical separation of two-metres where possible; obtaining vaccination and practicing good hand hygiene. Residents should continue to monitor for symptoms and follow local Public Health guidance.
