The City of St. Catharines will be hosting a free virtual event on June 18 to assist local youth with their mental wellbeing and motivation during the pandemic.
“We are proud to be supporting this initiative, which has been spearheaded by the St. Catharines Youth Collective,” said Director of Community, Recreation and Culture Services Phil Cristi. “This new collective is a group of motivated young people who understand first-hand the toll the pandemic has had on the mental wellbeing of their peers.”
The St. Catharines Youth Collective (STCYC) was formed to provide a voice for the youth of St. Catharines on important recreational and social issues concerning the City’s younger population, and to act as advocates for programs that will enhance the quality of life, health and wellbeing of St. Catharines youth.
“It is no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has had an adverse effect of the mental wellbeing of our youth, with disruptions to in-person schooling, cancelled activities and many other restrictions,” said Mayor Walter Sendzik. “Creating opportunities, like this event, for young people to speak up and receive assistance or simply learn more about optimizing their mental wellbeing is so beneficial to our community right now.”
The event, titled Youth Matters: How to maintain resilience and prioritize mental wellbeing, will take place on June 18 via hopin.com, a virtual venue with multiple interactive areas. Attendees will be able to move in and out of rooms just like an in-person event to take advantage of break-out sessions and meet one-on-one with peers as well as presenters using a networking feature.
Speakers will include Kevin Rempel, an expert in change management, mental health, and resilience, who will give a keynote titled The Hero Mindset about applying the principles inside what he calls, the resilience toolbox.
After a freestyle motocross accident left Rempel an incomplete paraplegic, he was told by doctors he would likely never walk again. However, his determination led him to not only walk again but eventually become one of Canada’s best Paralympic athletes earning a Bronze medal at the 2014 Paralympics in Sochi, Russia.
Rempel’s interactive keynote will guide attendees through a series of immediately actionable tools to increase their mental resilience.
The event will also include a breakout session addressing unhealthy habits and how to overcome them, which will be facilitated by Rempel along with Shaun Baylis, CEO of Pathstone Mental Health.
