December 5th, 2024 – I would like to thank Premier Ford and the Ontario government for the steps announced today regarding the homelessness, opioid and mental health crises in Ontario. The Premier has taken our collective concerns seriously, and the proposed legislation as outlined in today’s letter clearly indicates a path forward in dealing with serious public safety and security concerns in our communities.
In the near future, we look forward to legislation that addresses:
greater funding and accountability in the role of the Niagara Region in housing the homeless individuals in our community;
new treatment and rehabilitation options, as opposed to incarceration, for those involved in minor and non-violent drug-related crimes;
increased penalties for people engaging in repeated illegal activities;
clear regulations around how cities deal with encampments near sensitive uses;
clear guidelines around the prohibition of illicit drug use in public for the Niagara Regional Police Service to enforce.
I would also like to commend my fellow Mayors who endorsed the letter, as well as those who have supported our collective request since its release. While there have been differing opinions on the nature of the requested changes, it is clear to all of us that taking action to address the needs of our residents is a top priority. I appreciate the commitment and dedication of my fellow Mayors to addressing critical issues and driving change in the face of these challenges.
