2023 Arts Awards recipients were celebrated at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre last night.
There were 14 nominees for awards in four categories: Established Artist, Emerging Artist, Arts in Education, and Making a Difference. One special nominee was also recognized with the Jury’s Pick Award.
“I am immensely proud of the artistic talent we have here in St. Catharines,” says Mayor Mat Siscoe. “Their work continues to inspire and elevate our community making our city a hub of artistic expression and innovation. My congratulations to all.”
Sandy Middleton was presented with the Established Artist Award. Sandy is a mixed media photographic artist. She has exhibited extensively throughout Ontario and, in 2021, was nominated as one of the 52 finalists for the Salt Spring National Arts Award.
The Emerging Artist Award was presented to Vik Mudge. Vik is a trans non-binary dance artist, choreographer, and dance instructor. Vik wants to create a landscape of performance that is safe for queer people, telling their stories in authentic and moving ways.
Alice Burke was presented with the Arts in Education Award. Alice is a dance educator with a career spanning more than 40 years. Dedicated to fostering diversity and change in the industry, her passion lies in mentoring emerging dance talents.
The Making a Difference Award was presented to Todd Green. Todd is the founder/executive director of Tomorrow’s Voices. This non-auditioned choir program provides an inclusive environment for kids and aims to eliminate as many barriers to participation as possible.
The Jury’s Pick Award was presented to Matter of Black. Matter of Black’s mission is to uplift Black voices and businesses within our community, promote Black excellence, and celebrate our rich history. In partnership with community groups and allies, they have presented EmancipationDaySTC since 2020.

These awards are a testament to the creativity and innovation of our local artists, and they highlight the significance of culture in enriching our community.”
