St. Catharines’ Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force has launched a fundraising campaign to erect a public work of art in Peart’s honour in Lakeside Park, alongside the recently named Neil Peart Pavilion, a place that inspired the lyrics to a famous Rush single of the same name.
“We have seen an incredible outpouring of support since the passing of Neil Peart, including interest from across the globe inquiring as to how people could support the creation of a memorial,” said Mayor Walter Sendzik. “The launch of the online fundraising efforts provides an opportunity for Rush fans around the world to contribute to this important project. The memorial will be an enduring tribute to an amazing musician, lyricist and author who called St. Catharines his hometown during his formative years - and a beacon for Rush fans to visit our community for years to come."
The Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force, chaired by David DeRocco, has been meeting since July 2020, reviewing options for the type and location of a memorial. Selection of an artist and artwork is currently underway. Following a request for pre-qualification, the task force recently selected the bids from seven recommended artists, including:
“We’re excited to reach another milestone, and finally provide supporters of this project a way to contribute to Neil’s memorial,” said Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force Chair David DeRocco. “We know how important this project is to the international community of fans of both Neil and Rush, but it’s also going to be an important artistic showpiece for the local community who flock to Lakeside Park year-round.”
DeRocco added that the sooner the task force can achieve its fundraising objectives through the generosity of Peart’s fans, the sooner the community and his fans will be able to see the results.
The commemorative work of art will contribute to the identity and character of the area and recognize the contributions of Peart to Canadian and world music, making it a beacon for Rush fans to visit for years to come.
“The Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force has done a fantastic job of making this project a reality,” said Manager of Business Planning and Strategic Services Eric Lamothe. “I look forward to celebrating the installation of the public work of art at Lakeside Park with our community in the future.”
