The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre has expanded its permanent site-specific installation – History InSite – to include Port Dalhousie.
The installation holds historical photographs from the museum’s collection against current St. Catharines streetscapes by presenting the modern photos at, or very close to, the places where they were originally taken.
“Port Dalhousie has a lot of historic and recognizable scenery which is very visible alongside the old photographs,” says Adrian Petry, visitor services coordinator for St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre. “The new signage allows visitors to compare the changed landscapes to the historical images, making the areas’ history meaningful and relevant to modern eyes.”
Visitors can take a walking tour of both the downtown portion of the installation, which was completed last summer, and now also the second phase in Port Dalhousie.
Additional photos of both areas and a bit of history are available on the museum’s website which can be accessed by using the QR code located on each sign or by visiting the museum blog at stcatharinesmuseumblog.com.
