Nov 20,2024 – I, like many others in the community, was angered to learn of the CBC report that the decision was made by the Parole Board of Canada to prohibit the families of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy from attending the upcoming parole hearing of their daughters’ killer.
It is beyond the pale for the families of the victims to be denied the right to read their Victim Impact Statements in person to the Parole Board, and the reported explanation that the Board would be unable to ensure safety and security of all hearing attendees should be absolutely unacceptable to all Canadians.
This decision benefits absolutely no one other than the killer, and should be reversed as soon as possible by the Board. I also hope that the Minister responsible for the Parole Board takes steps to ensure this type of decision is not repeated in the future.
