In November 2020 St. Catharines City Council approved budget for a new washroom to be included in the 2021 capital budget after requests from the community for more public facilities. Now, the City is asking for input from residents on their preferred location and design of the washroom.
“COVID-19 has meant a re-prioritization of projects that create opportunities for residents to enjoy the city’s open spaces and address social needs in the community,” said Director of Engineering, Facilities and Environmental Services Anthony Martuccio. “Feedback on the location and design of the washroom will be crucial in the development of a facility that can provide equal access to as many people as possible.”
An online survey is now available for residents regarding the installation of the new public washroom. Within the survey residents are asked to consider the best possible location for the facility within the downtown area, and, based on a list of pros and cons, choose from a list of washroom designs. The suggested designs include an automated self-cleaning washroom, a minimalist Portland Loo-style facility, and a more conventional public restroom.
Survey results will be compiled for a report to Council with a recommendation on the type of facility and will feed into next steps. The final design and location will be assessed based on several factors, including initial costs, ongoing maintenance costs and public needs.
