The St. Catharines Fallen Firefighters Memorial Task Force (FFMTF) has been hard at work raising funds for a meaningful memorial which will honour firefighters.
“The memorial task force has been working diligently for well over a year and is proud of what we have been able to accomplish so far to honour our City’s fallen firefighters, however, the fundraising campaign is in many respects just getting going,” said FFMTF Chair Barry Katzman. “The response from the community has been extremely positive but we need the community to continue to support this initiative at all levels and to take advantage of the multiple ways they can show their appreciation to our local heroes while the donation and recognition opportunities are still available.”
There are still several opportunities to donate. Individuals or businesses can purchase an inscribed brick that will be become part of the pathway leading to the memorial statue. Other items can be customized such as memorial benches, trees, a place on the donor wall, landscape elements, flags, and other special features, or individuals are welcome to donate without purchasing an element.
The site that was chosen is a prominent downtown location in a City parkette bordered by Race, Carlisle, and McGuire streets. A formal opening ceremony will be planned once the build is complete.
“Our team at St. Catharines Fire is humbled by the outpouring of support coming in,” said St. Catharines Fire Chief Dave Upper adding, “we hope to have all of our supporters join us and the families of our fallen at our inaugural memorial ceremony later this year.”
The memorial will honour full-time members of St. Catharines Fire Service who have fallen in the line of duty, as well as honour volunteer firefighters who fell in service to various St. Catharines wards and townships prior to 1919 when the St. Catharines Professional Firefighters Association Local 485 was formed.
