After hundreds of submissions for naming of the pavilion at Lakeside Park, City staff have whittled down suggestions to a list of two names for the structure. Earlier this year, following the death of famed Rush drummer and one-time St. Catharines resident Neil Peart, City Council engaged the City’s naming policy, responding to broad support from the community for a means of memorializing Peart.
The initial two-week round of submissions in March echoed that community support, with a deluge of suggestions recognizing the Peart name in some fashion.
“We really want to thank all those who took the time to make a suggestion, we received so many submissions, including plenty for Neil Peart,” said Manager of Business Planning and Strategic Services Eric Lamothe.
After staff review, and consultations with the Peart family, the City has settled two possible names for the public to vote on, ‘Neil Peart Pavilion’ and ‘Lakeside Park Pavilion.’
Voting opens on Friday via the City’s online engagement platform at www.engageSTC.ca/LakesideParkPavilion. Following two weeks of voting the results will be tallied and the name presented to City Council for final approval.
Building on ongoing public consultations underscoring a desire to memorialize Peart, the City is looking at further options to recognize the Neil Peart legacy. On April 22, City Council will vote to form a Neil Peart Memorial Task Force. Should it be approved the task force will bring together members of Council and the public to investigate options for a memorial to Peart, including form, site selection and funding.
